In July, 1982, Barb and I went to the The Buccaneer (website) in St. Croix for what was supposed to have been a Bei Jing-Washington board meeting. The meeting, which was set up as sort of a boondoggle, didn’t happen, but my boss Neal let the two of us go anyway in lieu of a bonus or a raise for me. We didn’t say no. It was our first visit to the Caribbean.
I was actually the one that researched different islands and resorts for the meeting, and chose the Buccaneer for its golf course. At that point, golf courses were fairly rare on Caribbean islands.
I played a few rounds on my own and Barb came out to join me on the course one afternoon. She gave it a try, but had the most fun putting and driving the cart.
St. Croix was nice, but it was no Hawaii. The island was not nearly as lush, and the town of Christiansted was considerably poorer than what I’d seen in Hawaii. We had a good time, nevertheless, but it was the first of a number of visits to various Caribbean islands that each paled in comparison to Hawaii. I was properly spoiled.
