We got our first kitten, Ralph, in October 1977, shortly after I moved into my college apartment in Arlington. We figure she was born in August. I’m not sure where we got her, but her first photos are from Barb’s birthday party later that month.

Very unfortunately, Ralph died only a month or so after this party, in November. It was a traumatic experience to find her cold little body curled up under my bed one evening. We think she maybe died from lead poisoning because she had a habit of eating the paint chips that flaked off various surfaces in the apartment. Or maybe it was the insecticides we used on the infestation of roaches that were our constant companions. We prefer to think it was lead chips.

In all, I suppose it was a sign we weren’t quite ready for a kitty. But we went ahead and tried again with Ziggy a few months later.
