Movies I Saw in 2025

A running tab of movies and series I’ve seen in theaters or at home, and a quick comment about them. I’ve succumbed to the idea of assigning a personal score for each film.  My scale:

  • 4 Stars – One of the best, well recommended
  • 3 Stars – Recommended, but some issues here and there
  • 2 Stars – Problematic, hard to recommend
  • 1 Star – Disappointment, stay away

Sinners, AMC Columbia, May 2025. Is it possible this was the first movie or worthwhile TV series I saw this year? Maybe I missed reviewing some things along the way but this is my first 2025 post. Ryan Coogler’s parable about the roots and appropriation of Black music and culture was ambitious, moving, confusing and ultimately disappointing as it descends into a vampire horror flick. He’s clearly dealing with important themes and there are a few transcendent scenes, particularly when the music conjures the spirits of all that came before and would come to be…but there was a lot I couldn’t stitch together and I still don’t know why it had to become a vampire movie. Real life and history seem horrid enough. I could probably appreciate watch it again with some Cliff Notes on what Coogler was trying to say, but I wish it had been clearer in the first place. Still, I’m impressed by the overall effort and I appreciate the contributions of Rhiannon Giddens and Jake Blount among the music advisors. 3 Stars.
