Hugo was with us from 1987 to 1993 in our Chrisland Cove and Davidge houses.

In July, 1987, we welcomed a new kitten, Hugo, to the family.

Walt was not at all sure about the new arrival.

Soon enough, Hugo became a big favorite. Well, first he became a favorite, then later he became big.

Somehow, Hugo became comfortable being on and around my head and shoulders. I liked slinging him on my shoulders and walking around.

By Christmas of 1988 and spring, 1989, Hugo was a big, friendly fellow.

By 1990, we were in Davidge house in Columbia, MD, and Hugo made himself at home.

Fall, 1990, Hugo is part of the furniture.

A few small repairs, fall 1992: Hugo had a problem with his leg. I can’t remember exactly what it was or whether it was related to his decline which came within months. I don’t think so, but I also don’t think we suspected he would get ill.

We didn’t mark the specifics, but I believe Hugo was diagnosed with kitty leukemia and declined quickly. The vet offered a program of chemotherapy but it was expensive and onerous, and held little prospect of giving Hugo a good quality of life. I do remember how sad it was to take him to the vet to put him to sleep. Hugo had been a good soul and deserved better.
