Barb-Bill Wedding – Reception

Our reception was held at lovely Cabell’s Mill, a historic mill and banquet hall in a Fairfax County park. Fred and Louise found the facility, not too far from their home in Oakton, VA. I had never been there before or since, but it’s a nice place for a reception. We’re glad it was a nice day to be outside.

Barb was especially concerned about the selection of food at our reception and that she should get first cut to make sure she got the stuff she wanted. She made sure there was roast beef (rare!) and shrimp. I’m not sure she worried about much else on the buffet, though I was. We made everyone wait at the reception until we arrived after taking photos at the church. Sure enough, she was first in line.

One of the only things about our wedding that I paid close attention to in planning was the music. We decided early that we wanted a DJ rather than a tacky wedding band. I think Louise found the DJ through word of mouth. I started working on an extensive playlist of music I wanted to hear. It included songs like “I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock n’ Roll)” (the Dave Edmunds version, not Nick Lowe’s), “She’s The One” by Bruce Springsteen, “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” by Manfred Mann and many more. I spent hours and hours developing the whole list.

A few days before the reception I had a call with the DJ to go over the list. He listened for about a minute and then said “Listen, I’m the DJ and I will make the choices. The point is to get people dancing.” That’s not what I wanted to hear, and getting people to dance was the least of my concerns. The DJ ended up incorporating a couple of my suggestions and sure enough, they tended to drive people off the floor but at least I knew why were being played. He did agree to play James Taylor’s version of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” for our first dance though I think he lobbied for Marvin Gaye’s original.
