A multi-pronged Aug-Sep 2018 trip to Boston to visit Allie, then to Lisbon via Dublin to spend time in Portugal with Laurie, culminating in a return to Boston to meet Barb for a long weekend.

Sunday, Sep. 2: Cascais
We decided rather than tackle another day in Sintra that today would be something of a rest day and a chance to further explore Cascais.
Thanks to the hours we spent yesterday walking through the 500-year history timeline at the Jeronimos Monastery, I awoke thinking about timelines, wondering if there were already tools out in the world to produce electronic timelines. This spun me off into an investigation of online timelines, some of which I did that morning and shared with Laurie, more of which I pursued later. That investigation is ongoing and a different topic area.
We ended up having a leisurely breakfast in the apartment then walk down a different road into the old town of Cascais. We explored some residential backstreets, get to the main park we’d been searching for our first day in Cascais. The Parque Marechal Carmona turns out to be an extensive place with lots of diversions for families and kids. We find a little cafe where we get a beer and stay in the shade for nearly two hours reading peacefully, interrupted occasionally by families of wandering chickens, peacocks and people. After we’ve read to each of our content we stroll through the rest of the park for a good while. It’s very pleasant and fun to see various families and folks enjoying their Sunday.
As it approached time for lunch we headed back into town and scoped out restaurants. We eventually pick a seaside place, The Music Bar, where Laurie has shrimp salad and I try the grilled sea bream. Both are pretty mediocre, but the views of the beach and harbor are nice, so we can’t complain. The beaches and the town itself are very crowded on this, one of the last Sundays of summer, but not oppressively. In the afternoon, Laurie hunts souvenirs for a little while before we head back to apartment for a rest and a beer. This is, after all, our rest and recuperation day.
That evening, we decide on a return visit for chicken dinner at Jardim dos Frangos. We once again share a grilled tiger prawn that is bigger and better than the first one. For variety, I try a portuguese beef dish with egg and french fries (and get half of Laurie’s chicken). The sardines the first day were better than the beef, but the whole meal is very good. Before long we head back for another quiet evening with the tennis for me and a movie for Laurie.
